Of all the ways screen time affects children, its impact on sleep is the most well-documented - and the most immediately harmful. Evening screen use delays bedtimes, reduces sleep duration, and degrades sleep quality in ways that ripple into every part of a child's day.
There are three distinct mechanisms through which screens disrupt children's sleep, and they often work simultaneously:
All screens - phones, tablets, TVs, laptops - emit blue-wavelength light. This wavelength specifically suppresses the production of melatonin, the hormone that signals to the body that it's time to sleep. When a child uses a screen in the hour before bed, their melatonin production is delayed by 30–90 minutes, making it harder to fall asleep even when they're tired.
Children are more sensitive to this effect than adults because their pupils are larger and their ocular lenses are clearer, allowing more blue light to reach the retina and the melanopsin-containing cells that control melatonin production.
Content itself is a problem. Engaging games, fast-paced YouTube videos, and social media are all designed to maintain high levels of mental arousal. A child whose brain is in a state of stimulation and excitement cannot transition to sleep easily - regardless of the time.
This is compounded by the emotional content of social media for older children and teenagers. Checking social feeds before bed exposes them to social stressors (comparison, exclusion, conflict) at exactly the wrong moment in the day.
The simplest mechanism: screens displace bedtime. A child who "just wants five more minutes" repeatedly delays sleep by 30–60 minutes over the course of an evening. Research shows that children with devices in their bedrooms sleep an average of 30–60 minutes less per night than those without.
A large-scale study of over 2,000 children found that those who used screens within 1 hour of bedtime were significantly more likely to sleep fewer than the recommended hours for their age, take longer to fall asleep, and report more daytime fatigue.
A single late night is recoverable. The problem is chronic, nightly screen use that chips away at sleep duration across the school year. Over weeks and months, a child who sleeps 30–45 minutes less per night than they need accumulates a "sleep debt" that cannot easily be repaid.
